Robust Shop, Napa, California: Our customer informed us that he likes to explore the great outdoors while carrying his bike on the back of his vehicle. Therefore, even though we normally recommend putting paint protection film on the front of the car, the customer preferred some protection on the back of his new Toyota 4Runner. Hence, we decided to install our ceramic paint protection film (PPF) on the back hatch of the vehicle alongside installing a 5-year ceramic coating on the rest of the truck.
We started the paint protection film (PPF) installation by first washing the 4Runner using our signature foam cannon wash and then inspecting the surface. Noticing no major flaws on the paint, we performed a light clay bar treatment on some of the horizontal surfaces that felt a bit rougher compared to the smooth surface of the rest of the car.
After the clay bar treatment, we used a detox treatment using a high-concentration IPA solution that cleansed the painted surfaces of any polish residues, oils, and other contaminants that may have interfered with the coating and film installation.
We started the installation first by doing a bulk cut install on the hood. Bulk cut install means that the paint protection film was cut and installed by hand and not using a dedicated plotter that would normally cut the film with precision. Bulk paint protection films, however, provide superior control and coverage of the vehicle which is why we prefer to bulk cut larger panels such as the hood.
We then installed pre-cut paint protection film on the fenders, bumpers, and the back hatch of the Toyota 4Runner. It’s important to note that we used a ceramic paint protection film (PPF) which comes with a hydrophobic top coat alongside the rock-chip proof and self-healing surface that comes with a traditional paint protection film. Though pricier to install, Ceramic paint protection films are extremely synergistic with ceramic coatings and remove the need to install a ceramic coating on top of the paint protection film.
Finally, we decided to cleanse all the painted surfaces of the Toyota 4Runner and install a 5-year ceramic coating on the remaining painted surfaces, top glass(moon roof), front windshield, polycarbonates(lights), and the face of the wheels. The combination of ceramic paint protection film (PPF) and ceramic coatings gave this 4Runner the ultimate protection against physical and chemical damage, thereby giving our customer the peace of mind while they pursue the journey of biking and exploring the great outdoors of California!
