A new Lucid Air can look clean and futuristic right from delivery, but even a fresh luxury EV can arrive with paint that needs real correction before it is protected. On this recent install, the customer wanted a finish that felt more tailored without creating headaches at lease return: a 3-year ceramic coating paired with a black satin chrome delete.
The preferred setup for this kind of work is always our Robust shop in Napa, where lighting, temperature, dust control, and tools are easier to manage. In this case, the installation happened at the customer’s home garage. That meant extra planning, careful surface prep, and a slower pace to make sure the result still matched shop-level expectations.
The goal was a cleaner look without hurting lease flexibility
The Lucid Air already has a sleek body shape, so the customer did not want an aggressive makeover. The plan was more refined: reduce the bright chrome accents with satin black vinyl and protect the paint with a ceramic coating suited to the expected ownership timeline.
That combination works especially well for a leased luxury vehicle.
The satin black trim gives the car a more cohesive, modern, and striking appearance, while the ceramic coating helps make routine washing easier and adds protection against common environmental grime. The customer chose a 3-year coating rather than a longer-term option because it better matched the lease window and the way the vehicle will be used.
Generally, longer coatings can make sense for owners keeping a car for many years. For a lease, a 3-year coating often hits the practical middle ground. It delivers gloss, slickness, and easier maintenance without paying for extra years that may not be needed.
The paint needed more prep than expected
One of the biggest surprises was the paint texture. Even though the Lucid Air was new, the surface felt rough to the touch. That usually points to bonded contaminants sitting on top of the clear coat.
This is common on new vehicles. Cars can pick up contamination during transport, storage, rail travel, dealership handling, and sitting outdoors. The paint may look clean, but a hand in a detailing glove test can reveal a gritty surface.
Before coating, we performed an extensive clay bar treatment to remove bonded particles and smooth the paint.
That step matters because ceramic coating should bond to clean, properly prepared paint. If the surface feels rough, coating over it can lock in contamination and reduce the final feel. Proper prep helps the coating lay down evenly and improves the finished result.
The clay process took extra time, but it changed the surface dramatically. Once the roughness was removed, the paint had the slick feel needed for the coating stage.
Why satin black vinyl was the right choice for the chrome delete
Satin black has a soft, factory-style look. It does not reflect as sharply as gloss black, and it does not look as flat as matte. On a Lucid Air, that finish helps the trim blend with the glass, wheels, and body lines without making the car look aftermarket.
Vinyl also works well on narrow trim pieces because it is made for color change. It can wrap curves, edges, and trim contours cleanly when installed correctly. For chrome delete work, the goal is not impact protection. The goal is a consistent color change that can be serviced or removed later.

For chrome delete on a leased vehicle, vinyl is often the better fit. It is designed for changing color, comes in more finish options, and is easier to justify when the modification may need to be reversed. Colored or tinted film can work in some scenarios, but for this type of trim transformation, satin vinyl keeps the project focused and practical.
The home install required extra control
Mobile work can be convenient for the customer, but it changes the way an installation has to be managed. A shop environment offers better control over lighting, airflow, shade, and surface temperature. Those details matter when applying ceramic coatings and vinyl.
For this home install, the process had to account for the conditions on site. The vehicle needed to be washed, decontaminated, dried, inspected, and protected without the same controlled setup available in our shop in Napa.
That meant working carefully around:
Direct sun and panel temperature
Dust and airborne debris
Limited lighting compared with the shop
Space around the vehicle
Timing between prep, vinyl, and coating steps
A clean environment is especially important during coating. Dust, moisture, or rushed prep can affect the finish. For vinyl, temperature and surface cleanliness affect how well the material lays and how cleanly edges finish. Both of these factors can be challenging to control in a garage or mobile environment.
The shop remains the preferred location for this reason. Still, with the right planning, a home installation can work when the customer needs it. The key is not rushing the process just because the setting is more convenient.

For new car owners, this project is a good reminder that “new” does not always mean ready for protection. Paint can still need decontamination and occasional paint correction and buffing.
