We started the colored PPF install on the blue Tesla Model Y by giving it our signature foam wash, ensuring that we cleaned as many nooks, crannies, and crevices as possible. Since the car was about a year and a half old, a very detailed wash is critical to the success of proper film adherence to the surfaces. After the wash, the car was given a thorough decontamination treatment to get rid of any grit, embedded dirt, tree sap, and other environmental contaminants that would impede the cosmetic paint protection film from adhering to the surfaces.
Once we finished our decontamination process on the Tesla Model Y, we gave the entire vehicle a full wipe-down and blast with high percent IPA(alcohol) that removed as much oils, sealants, and remaining residue on the painted surfaces. We then started to disassemble the Tesla Model Y, from windshield trim to emblem removal to detaching the bumper, back lights, and fender trims. Once these pieces of Tesla’s body were removed, we gave the entire vehicle another IPA cleansing and started to install the colored paint protection film (PPF) one panel at a time until the complete vehicle was fully wrapped. Some areas with complex curves, such as the bumper, mirror, and trunk were seam-sealed to ensure that the film isn’t stretched too much to compromise its thickness and self-healing properties. Unlike vinyl wraps, cosmetic paint protection films need to have more seams during the install to ensure superior coverage and protection while minimizing the stretchability of the film.

With advanced heating, edge tucking under gaskets using surgical tools and extreme precision and care, we wrapped the entire blue Tesla Model Y and turned it into a color-shifting jungle green color. It’s also important to note that colored PPF did a fantastic job at covering up minor rock chips and light scrapes, even in places where the base color and clear coat of the vehicle were gone! In other words, the 1.5 years old Tesla Model Y, from a practical standpoint, now looked like it had a new(and unique) paint job on it!
Additionally, unlike vinyl wraps, colored PPF is self-healing, has a light ceramic top coat on it, and provides unparalleled protection against rock chips, light scrapes, and dings. Another important distinction to point out here, especially compared to clear and matte paint protection films, colored paint protection film that we use at Robust has air pocket release technology which translates into wet or dry bubbles easily dissipating over time leaving a pristine and bubble-free finish on the vehicle.
From the pictures and videos, you can see how the car has become a complete showstopper on the road. In a nutshell, though exceptionally complex to properly install, colored paint protection films are the pinnacle of automotive cosmetics that provide the aesthetics of a traditional vinyl wrap but with the pristine and ultimate self-healing protection of traditional clear and matte wraps. Our film is also warranted for 10 years, giving our customers peace of mind.
