Deep Scratch and Swirl Removal from a Black Mercedes GLC using Two-Step Paint Correction & 5-Year Ceramic Coating in Napa, California

Our Napa customer and owner of a recently purchased black Mercedes GLC had reached out to us a month in advance to get an idea of what it would take to get his vehicle looking pristine while at the same time giving it ultimate protection for his regular commutes from Napa to San Francisco and back. We recommended giving his Mercedes GLC a 2-step paint correction to help get rid of the deeper scratches and swirls, using touch-up paint on certain areas of the vehicle where there were light rock chips, and then installing a 5-year ceramic coating on all painted surfaces to give the Mercedes full protection against damage from environmental contaminants, bird bombs, tree sap, industrial fallout, and other forms of chemical damage.
We started the paint correction and coating installation process by first giving the vehicle our signature foam cannon wash that got rid of any dirt and debris from all exterior surfaces of the vehicle. We then used ultra-plush high-GSM microfiber drying towels to leave a streak-free finish on the paint and then inspected the surface for any areas that may require clay bar treatment. After performing a clay bar treatment to remove above surfaces contaminants on the Mercedes, we started the paint correction process by first giving the entire vehicle a deep compounding pass which entailed using a high-speed buffer, high-end Italian heavy cut buffing foam-wool pad, and a compound that sectionally removed a fraction of the clear coat to remove heavy swirls and scratches from the painted surfaces.
Since the compounding process is aggressive and leaves swirl marks of its own, especially visible on darker paints, we then followed up the compounding process by using a medium cut pad, high-speed buffer, and a light cut polish to refine the surface to remove the light swirl marks created by the last compounding process. The combination of compounding and polishing, a two-step paint correction process, turned the customer’s black Mercedes GLC into a black pearl. We performed a detox treatment to not only remove all polishing residues and oils but also to prime the surface for proper coating bonding and adhesion.
Finally, we installed a 5-year professional ceramic coating that chemically bonded with the clear coat of the vehicle and left a slick, hydrophobic, and glossy finish that would not only protect the surface against chemical damage but also make maintenance a breeze for our customer since nothing would stick to the surface. You can think of ceramic coatings as turning your vehicle’s painted surfaces into a non-stick pan! The coating was applied on all painted surfaces, front and top glass, face of the wheels, and all polycarbonates(lights).
The customer was impressed by our results and you can see in the video in this article how the two-step paint correction process removed 90-95% of scratches and swirls on the vehicle’s paint, showing near-pristine results in direct sunlight.
